XBlaze Code: Embryo Review for PlayStation Vita

Aksys Games has an interest to localize more visual novels in North America, and it certainly had a winner when Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward was released on the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS. They try it again with Arc System Words, a developer that strays from its fighting roots and creates a visual novel based off one of its popular franchises, BlazBlue. Take away all the intuitive puzzles and interaction from Zero Escape, and you’re left with XBlaze: Code Embryo.

Embryo takes place 150 years prior to the BlazBlue storyline. Despite its ties, it really isn’t necessary to know anything about BlazBlue to understand what’s going on. Fans of the fighting series will recognize Easter eggs throughout.

However, if you take away any of the BlazBlue links, what you have is a mediocre storyline. In some way shape or form, this story has been done before, and a lot better.

The protagonist is a high-school guy, timid and shy, that doesn’t know how to handle himself when a bunch of busty women enter his life. It all starts when he ventures out into the unknown and finds a zombie– er, a “Union”, and has the mysterious power of picking them up with a bell-ringing sound. You find out rather quickly that the reason he can hear the sounds is because he’s a Union himself. Drama ensues.

As expected, Embryo becomes nothing short of a short anime series that belongs in the harem genre. Yet for those that love that genre, it still leaves the player/viewer empty.

There’s nothing spectacularly gripping about the plot, which is a mighty downfall considering it’s a visual novel. But does the game still actually play well?

Embryo’s gameplay is exclusively in the TOi, a device that lets users pick what news stories they want to read. That’s it — based on what the player reads, the game will send them in a certain direction. While the key replay value in visual novels is to have multiple endings (and sometimes needing to avoid the bad ending), just picking paragraph-long articles to read becomes tedious.

The developers believed that picking articles may have created a unique way to progress in a visual novel, but it ends up being a chore. Especially when they aren’t written well, and a lot of them are simply boring. It actually devalues replay, because there’s really no interest to “play” through this mediocre plot. It’s completely unintuitive.

Touchscreen controls on the Vita are responsive and exact, but messing around with the TOi interface feels unnatural. Having to click into a section and then clicking on an item should only be needed when selecting things with the physical buttons. Again, that all enters into the lack of effort that appears made toward this game.

Embryo needs something more than just choosing articles to read. We all understand what a visual novel is, but one that’s listed at a $40 retail price on an actual gaming device needs a little more meat. This is something that could have come out on Androids for $10.

Not only that, but the game suffers from spelling errors and glitches. While I didn’t run into any trophy issues (to my knowledge) in my test run with the Vita version, there’s been players saying that the game cannot be completed at 100 percent due to saving glitches in between episodes. What I did run into were spelling and grammar errors in multiple instances.

It wasn’t enough to distract from the game. Especially when grammar’s concerned, it’s expected to see stuff like that slip through the cracks in translation. What’s actually disappointing is the fact that this was released last July in Japan, and there was no effort to create an English track nearly a year after for the North American audience. This is not a long visual novel — if a 50-hour Tales of game can be completed with English dialogue, there’s no excuse this game couldn’t have the option.

What Embryo does get right are the visuals. The photos are gorgeously detailed and the character design is rather unique — something the BlazBlue series thrives on. There’s even the option to remove the text on-screen with the Select button and take pictures with the Vita. Despite the substandard plot, the characters are so wildly different that it’s easy for fans to start picking out who they like and dislike throughout the story. Unfortunately, some of the fantastic art is hindered with limited, repetitive animations by the characters. Again, the effort just doesn’t feel like it was set at 100 percent.

BlazBlue fans will have more of an attachment to Embryo and will see past some of the shortcomings. But still, they’ll be left with a below average storyline that will be forgotten as soon as something else is played. It’s a game that can easily be polished off over a weekend (or a really lazy Saturday) and possibly never picked up again.

If Aksys wants to continue localizing visual novels and actually net a profit, it has to stray away from substandard plots that offer zero interactivity and doesn’t take advantage of the Vita’s capabilities. It may sell with its BlazBlue ties, but even the biggest fans of the franchise will disappointed in this effort both in development and localization.

What's Good
  • Full touchscreen support
  • Art slides are visually appealing
  • Anybody can enjoy the story even with BlazBlue ties
What's Not
  • Mediocre storyline
  • Choosing your way feels unintuitive
  • No English dialogue option
  • Spelling and grammatical erros
Final Score: 4/10

PlayStation Vita will get Don't Starve: Giant Edition

Don't Starve: Giant's Edition Stomping To PS Vita
Photo via Flickr

Don't have a PlayStation 4 and missed out on free Don't Starve? The developer announced that a port along with DLC will be released on PlayStation Vita.

CVG reported Klei Entertainment's announcement on Friday along with detailing what would be a part of it.

Survival mode, adventure mode, and all of the original game's updates and characters will be included. Players can also jump into the Reign of Giants expansion if they wish, adding two seasons, two new characters, and additional monsters.

There was no confirmation that the multiplayer expansion would hit the portable release. That would be a huge miss if it weren't in an otherwise critically-acclaimed game.

The survival game that relies on trial-and-error is extremely deep and well worth playing, especially for those that got it free on the PS4. Don't expect Cross-Buy support for those that already have the console edition, but hopefully the game will be priced reasonably. If not at the $14.99 Steam and console price, then hopefully nothing above $20.

PlayStation Plus services changes format beginning in June, free games announced

Sony has announced changes in how they will be distributing free games on their PlayStation Plus service, and there will be two free games per platform in a monthly release.

What does that mean for the future of the service and how does that change from what it's like now? Currently, one to two games are released every Tuesday, and a new PlayStation 4 game is generally released at the beginning of the month. In this new format, that means two free PS4 games will now be available.

The move is great for both sides. Sony doesn't have to mess with releasing a free game on a weekly basis. Gamers won't have to wait until they see a game they like on a list that's released at the end of the previous month.

In the past, Sony would release the full list of games being released for the following month. Now, instead of those being staggered through each Tuesday, gamers can just pick them all up on the first Tuesday of each month.

Here's the full installment of games for both the United States and Europe in the month of June:

PS4

  • Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate
  • Trine 2: The Complete Story
PS3
  • NBA 2K14
  • Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (US)
  • Lone Survivor (Europe)
VITA
  • Terraria (US)
  • Mutant Mudds Deluxe (US)
  • Dragon's Crown (Europe)
  • Surge Deluxe (Europe)
Constant stables of the Instant Game Collection, such as Uncharted 3 and XCOM Enemy Unknown, should be picked up before its too late. Those games that have been free for almost a year now will likely be taken off the service fairly soon.

It's a bummer to see Dragon's Crown not on the US shores, but don't be surprised to see that as a free game this summer. I bought it while on sale on the PSN, and it doesn't disappoint.

I'll definitely look to pick up the NBA game as I skipped out on it this season (although it would have been better as a PS4 freebie) and since I could never get into Terraria on my mobile Android phone, perhaps I'll get into it on the Vita.

PlayStation Update for May 27, 2014: Watch_Dogs finally released, Rayman sale not that great, free LIMBO

New Releases

PS4

  • Watch_Dogs - $59.99 (Digital/Retail)*
PS3
  • Ace Combat Infinity - FTP (Digital)
  • Watch_Dogs - $59.99 (Digital/Retail)*
VITA
  • Lemmings Touch - $9.99 (Digital)
  • Mind Zero - $27.99 (Digital/Retail)**
  • Monster Monpiece - $29.99 (Digital)
  • The Sly Cooper Collection - $29.99 (Digital/Retail)
DEMOS
  • Thief - PS4
Obviously the pick of the week is the highly touted game that's receiving plenty of press, Watch_Dogs. Critics have been varying wildly on the game, ranging from perfection to a nice attempt at a franchise, but it has a long way to go. Graphical issues and glitches have hindered the game and is a complaint in many of the reviews, leaving many to wonder if the developers really struggled at putting this game together even after its lengthy delay.

Not much press is out yet for Aksys Games' Mind Zero on Vita, but you can either await reviews or try your luck for just under $30 with it on sale.

*Gold Edition: $79.99
**PlayStation Plus price

Note that with PS+, The LEGO Movie video games are at a further discount ($40.49 on PS4, $33.74 on PS3, $20.24 on Vita) and Master Reboot for PS3 is at $7.64.

Persona 4 Golden finally gets the discount that the retail version received months ago. Well worth it at that price, even though $30 is good enough for how great of a game that is. I'd highly recommend Catherine at $10 as well for those that like puzzle games that go along with one of the better, most original stories you'll find in a game.

Some things that look better than they really are: Rayman Legends received a hefty slash from its $60 price tag, but that's an outrageous price digitally. Currently you can find a retail copy of the game for just $16.99 at Amazon.

Also, The Cursed Crusade looks tempting for just $5, receiving a $15 discount. But that game sucks, so don't get suckered into it.

Instant Game Collection

This week's free game is LIMBO on PlayStation Vita. Very much recommended. I played this game when received in a Humble Bundle on the PC and will definitely be playing it again on the Vita.

Have a great week!

PlayStation Update: Wolfenstein The New Order, huge PSone import blowout, free Puppeteer

A slew of new releases are now available, including the new Wolfenstein and lots of RPGs (especially imports). Also, there's a lack of PlayStation Plus discounts, but there's two free games to make up for it.

New Releases

PS4
  • Sparkle 2 - $7.99 (Digital, Cross-Buy)
  • Transistor - $19.99 (Digital)
  • Wolfenstein: The New Order - $59.99 (Digital/Retail)

PS3
  • Drakengard 3 - $49.99 (Digital/Retail)
  • Mugen Souls Z - $49.99 (Digital/Retail)
  • R-Type Dimensions - $9.99 (Digital)
  • Wolfenstein: The New Order - $59.99 (Digital/Retail)

VITA
  • Sparkle 2 - $7.99 (Digital, Cross-Buy)

CLASSICS/IMPORTS
  • Dragon Beat Legend of Pinball - $5.99 (PSone Import)
  • Heroine Dream 2 - $5.99 (PSone Import)
  • Neo Planet - $5.99 (PSone Import)
  • Sarara's Little Shop - $5.99 (PSone Import)
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga - $9.99 (PS2 Classic)
  • Tokyo 23-Ku Seifuku Wars - $5.99 (PSone Import)
There's a lot on tap, especially for fans of PSone imports. Not being one of them personally, we'll jump right into the highlight of the week which is Wolfenstein from MachineGames and Bethesda Studios. This game has received quite a bit of advertising and it's coming in with above-average reviews.

Being able to wield two weapons at the same time, Wolfenstein promises to deliver a retro-like first person shooter (even with some nostalgic original Wolfenstein moments) in a new-generation atmosphere.

Elsewhere, PS4's new action RPG, Transistor, has received a lot of attention from critics and has potential to be a sleeper hit. And what's turning into weekly release of new RPGs, there's two options -- Drakengard 3 and Mugen Souls Z -- for PS3 owners.

PS+ PSN Discounts (and Price Drops)

There are no actual PS+ discounts this week (new releases or otherwise) but there are still some sales still going on. Here's the latest as well as price drops since, quite frankly, there's nothing else to put in this category.
  • God Mode (PS3) - $4.99
  • Muramasa Rebirth Genroku Legends - A Cause to Daikon For, Fishy Tales of the Nekomata (PS3/Vita) - $2.49
  • Game of Thrones (PS3) - $4.99
  • Trine 2 (PS3) - $4.99
  • Urban Trial Freestyle PS3/Vita Bundle - $13.99, (PS3) - $9.99, (Vita) - $6.99

Instant Game Collection

The PS+ service makes up for the lack of discounts with two free games this week. Puppeteer for the PS3 definitely makes up for the lack of sales, for those that haven't played the game already. It's been somewhat of a cult hit for those that keep up with all the Sony exclusives. It's an absolute must for any platformer fan.

Another free game is Surge Deluxe for the Vita. It's a matching color puzzle game that I never heard of until today, but sometimes those are the best time wasters.

Have a great week, everyone!

PlayStation Update for 5-13-14: Minecraft on PS3, free-to-play sale, free Skullgirls

Lots of discounts on free-to-play add ons, the Hitman Trilogy is less than $15, and a fighter is the free game in this week's PlayStation update.

New Releases

PS3

  • Minecraft: PS3 Edition - $19.99 (Retail - Friday)
  • Serious Sam 3: BFE - $14.99* (Digital)
VITA

  • Borderlands 2 Vita - $39.96** (Digital/Retail)
  • Soul Sacrifice Delta - $49.99 (Digital)
DEMOS
  • Ragnarok Odyssey ACE - PS3/Vita
  • XBlaze Code: Embryo - PS3/Vita
*PlayStation Plus price
**Amazon price

A bit light on the slate for new releases this week, considering there's nothing actually new. The highlight has to be Minecraft, which is currently the best-selling PlayStation 3 game on Amazon at $20. The craze continues, and it's not even out until Friday.

For those that don't know what Serious Sam is, that's an old-school first person shooter that hails to the days of Doom and Quake, when you blow up monsters with massive guns. This new edition is pretty old -- it was released on Xbox a year and a half ago -- and the PS+ price is the bare minimum to get this game. In fact, you're better off waiting for the full-fledged experience of an old-school shooter like Wolfenstein next week.

What is Soul Sacrifice Delta? It's basically an Ultimate Edition, including the game and downloadable content. It includes a "new Grimm faction" and has upgrades over the original edition.

PSN Discounts

This week, Sony is discounting nearly all of their free-to-play games. Yes, that sounds like an oxymoron, but plenty of FTP games have so much DLC, it could almost be like playing a full game. Hell, it can be even more expensive at times! For those interested, there are some massive deals on PS+ along with a big variety of games.
  • Blacklight Retribution Zcoins: 100 - $.48, 500 - $2.44, 1,000 - $4.89, 2,500 - $12.24, 5,000 - $24.49, 10,000 - $48.99 ($50 savings)
  • DC Universe Online Ultimate Edition (PS4) - $13.99
  • DCUO UE Starter Pack (PS3) - $13.99
  • DCUO: Lightning Strikes / Origin Crisis - $4.89
  • Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: Complete Costume Set - $10.00 ($30 savings)
  • DOA5: Complete Casual Collection Vol. 1 - $2.75
  • DOA5: Ultimate Sexy Costumes - $3.75
  • Dust 514: Various Combat and Assault Packs - $2.50

  • Spartacus Legends Gladiator Starter Pack - $3.75
  • Spartacus Gold Coins: 240 - $5.00, 650 - $12.50, 1,100 - $18.75, 3,000 - $37.50
  • Warframe: 75 Plantinum - $3.59, 170 Plantinum - $6.74, 370 Plantinum - 13.49
  • Warframe: 1000P + Mod - $33.74, 2100P + Mod - $67.49, 3210P + Mod - $101.24 ($48 savings)
Here are some other discounts for a couple of Square Enix games:
  • Hitman Absolution Special Edition - $8.99
  • Hitman Trilogy HD - $14.39 ($25 savings)
  • Tomb Raider (PS3) - $13.49
Instant Game Collection

This week's free game is a 2D anime fighter, Skullgirls Encore, on the PlayStation 3. I never played the game, and only heard about the story between Konami and Lab Zero Games. This is an upgrade to the original Skullgirls after the developer cut ties with Konami. After being pulled from availability on consoles last December, the game was re-released under Autumn Games back in February for $15.

For those that haven't gotten burned out on all the fighters that have been released on the IGC for Vita, might as well grab a six-pack and give this one a go. Also, it'd be fun to play a fighter on the big screen for once.

Have a great week, everyone!

Sound Shapes has new DLC on all PlayStation platforms

Sound Shapes has two new DLC packs released today, adding to the many options artists have to create awesome levels.

There have been some amazing creations with Sound Shapes -- some examples are over at the PlayStation Blog -- and now two new creation packages have been released for under a dollar each: the Brass Sound Pack and Nature Art Pack.

What's included? It's pretty self explanatory. The Brass Sound Pack lets users bring in jazz music to their levels, and the Nature Art Pack features environmental graphics. Here's some of the nature pack in action:

Sound Shapes is developed by Queasy Games inside the Sony Santa Monica Studio and is published by Sony. The DLC packs are available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita.

***Borderlands 2 on Vita released as standalone next week.

The big release this week is a semi-relaunch of the Vita with a thinner, cheaper edition of the handheld with Borderlands 2. Now the popular title from 2K Games is available for those that want to replay it and loot on the go. There are some limitations in this version, including two-player co-op, and there are some reviewers reportedly turned off by this version in their first impressions.

Elsewhere, PlayStation 4 gets its monthly free game with Stick it to the Man, a game that's already available on other consoles. Other highlights include MLB 14 The Show finally on PS4 along with Titan Attacks! released on all three platforms.

Strangely enough, no classics, imports, or demos are new this week.

PS+ Discounts

Activision is holding a sale on some of their games and downloadable content. The quality of both the discounts and the games on the list are left to be desired, but maybe those interested in messing with one of the Cabela hunting games can finally get their fix.

Traditional RPG 'End of Serenity' on PSP coming to North America in summer

An old-school RPG, End of Serenity, is being released in North America this summer on the PlayStation Network as a PSP release. That's right.

EOS was ported to the PSP after it was originally released as End of Aspiration on iOS and Android platforms back in 2012. It receives an NA localization by Natsume after fans were quick to pick up Mystic Chronicles, according to the CEO [via IGN].

"Mystic Chronicles ended up being a surprise fan favorite in 2013, and we're happy to bring players a game that will have a similar appeal to our North American audience," said Natsume President and CEO Hiro Maekawa. "Inspired by the look and feel of old school, 16-bit RPGs, we feel our fans will really connect to the game's look, feel and story."

While it is getting released for the PSP, there will obviously not be a physical copy of the game, just a PSN release, and it obviously will be playable on the Vita.

There's probably not much difference between the version that's going to be released and the one that's currently available on mobile platforms. It's currently in both stores for $7.99, but Google Play is running a special 50 percent sale, so it's available at $3.99

My advice is to just pick that up for those that have Android devices.

End of Serenity/Aspiration is developed by Kemco.

'Tales of' updates: 'Xillia 2' on PS3 receives US release date, 'Hearts R' on Vita confirmed later this year

Tales of Hearts R for the PlayStation Vita will be released in North America during the winter holiday later this year and Tales of Xillia 2 for the PlayStation 3 will be released in August, also this year.

On Monday, publisher Bandai Namco addressed rumors that the fan-favorite of the Tales of series would be released in the United States.

No official release date has been set, but the game will come out in Winter 2014 in North America and Europe. Despite the game also being on Nintendo DS and iOS in Japan, it will be a Vita exclusive in the stateside.

PlayStation LifeStyle reports that it's still up in the air if the localization will include a dubbed English track or simply English subtitles, according to a representative from Bandai Namco.

IGN reported earlier Tuesday that Xillia 2 will be released in North America first on August 19th this year, then in Europe a couple days later.

Tales of Xillia 2 will finally be released on PlayStation 3 in August 2014; North America first on August 19, then European territories on August 22. (The game was originally released in Japan on November 1, 2012.)

Of course, a Collector's Edition was announced for it as well, including a soundtrack, figurine, artbook, pocket watch, and more.

The first installment of Xillia came out last August stateside. So for those of you that still have Tales of games in your backlog (like me still needing to complete Graces F), it's time to get cracking on them before two more come out by the end of the year.

Santa Monica may not fix latest PlayStation All-Stars patch

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale was patched up over a week ago, affecting how the game is installed on the PlayStation Vita and still not addressing some character issues. It appears that Sony Santa Monica may not be able to fix some of these bugs.

SSM released this announcement on the official PlayStation forms, acknowledging that they are hearing user's complaints, but may not be able to do much about it. From PlayStation Lifestyle:

Saying how “we cannot promise a 2nd patch,” Sony Santa Monica added, “but I can promise you we’re reading all feedback and evaluating any potential game-breaking, emergency level issues. We understand a balance patch of this magnitude may require tuning, but have yet to determine if we can.”

It hasn't been a great time for the troubled Sony developer. For those unaware, SSM has been hit with layoffs and talented people leaving the studio. A new IP that was in the works was also cancelled. Currently, they're working with Ready at Dawn for the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive, The Order 1886.

The good news is the Vita players having trouble installing the game is being worked on, and it could have been fixed over the weekend. SSM doesn't believe it requires another patch to solve for everybody.

SSM has stated that the gap between the best and worst players have shrunk significantly, and some character issues, such has Kat and Cole not being nerfed enough (as they highlighted) may simply not be reached due to lack of "resources to address" those.

PlayStation Update for 4-15-14: Final Fantasy XIV is now on PS4, LEGO and NBA 2K14 sale

There's finally lots of PlayStation 4 games and less PlayStation 3 games! Plus The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is available for pre-ordering, a slew of LEGO games and NBA 2K14 is on sale, and this week's free game features a classic Disney mascot.

PlayStation Plus prices listed.

  • Castle of Illusion Sega Genesis Bundle - PS3 - $14.99
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows - PS3 - $14.99

Finally, lots of stuff for the PlayStation 4. But how awesome is it really? There's a lack of a full-fledged game, even in the indie scene.

It's very exciting for Final Fantasy MMO fans. FFXIV finally hits the new-generation console at a discount. Other than that? A couple of board games, trick racing, and some trivia game that should include a case of beer with its price.

Definitely stay away from Sony's absurd price of a full retail game for Beyond: Two Souls digitally. It can currently be had for just $32.30, and you'll definitely find it cheaper if you're patient.

Believe it or not, Vita wins this week in content. Conception II is a turn-based RPG for those that need something new after Persona 4 Golden. Dead Nation has been re-released for the portable, Ethan: Meteor Hunter is a solid price and ported over from the PS3, and you can't go wrong with a free game.

PSN GAME/DLC DISCOUNTS

Pure Chess has a game packages on sale, but I won't be listing them here. Those that are even getting the board game might as well pick up the whole darn thing for 12 bucks. Otherwise, the game packs are $2.24  each while the Batallion, Easter Island, and Halloween chest sets run $0.89 each.

Otherwise, the LEGO series is on sale, as well as NBA 2K14 and its DLC.
  • Burgertime World Tour - $4.99
  • Darksiders II - $39.99
  • Draw Slasher (Vita) - $1.50
  • Ethan: Meteor Hunter (PS3/Vita) - $7.99
  • God Mode - $4.99
  • LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (PS3/Vita) - $12.59
  • LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 (PS3) - $12.59
  • LEGO Legends of Chima: Laval's Journey (Vita) - $12.59
  • LEGO Lord of the Rings (PS3/Vita) - $12.59
  • LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (PS4) - $31.49 / (PS3) - $25.19 / (Vita) - $18.89
  • NBA 2K14 (PS4) - $49.99 / (PS3) - $29.99
  • NBA 2K14 Blue Diamond Jewelry Collection - $12.49
  • NBA 2K14 Gold Jewelry Collection - $2.49
  • NBA 2K14 Platinum Jewelry Collection - $4.99
  • NBA 2K14 Spanish Commentary Pack - $2.49
  • TMNT: OOTS Character Avatar Pack - Free
  • Trine 2 - $5.99
Seriously, the Spanish commentary costs money for NBA 2K14? C'mon guys...

Otherwise, for the crazy LEGO fans that can't get enough of their adventure games, I highly recommend picking these games up on sale. Playing the Lord of the Rings edition is the only way I can sit through that story, because any of those movies put me to sleep in one hour or less. Guaranteed! Plus, it's cheaper than getting all the movies, and will probably take less time to complete.

Which is weird...

INSTANT GAME COLLECTION

This week's free game is Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse on the PS3. No, I haven't played Disney games since the Super NES era with Aladdin. And this game probably isn't as good as Aladdin, so I may skip on this adventure. We'll see what the weekend brings.

Speaking of Aladdin, isn't it about time we get a remake of that fantastic game? C'mon [insert random indie developer here], you know you want to!

Enjoy the rest of your week, everyone!

Compare all three versions of Final Fantasy X and X-2 in one video

Want a side-by-side comparison of all three versions of Final Fantasy X and X-2 for the Playstation 2, 3, and Vita? Find out if the newly released upgrade is worth your cash.

Digital Foundry released over six minutes of footage on all three platforms. First up, here's the video. As clearly indicated, the PS2 edition is on the left, PS3 is on the center, and Vita is on the right.

When it comes to differences between the original FFX and the Remaster edition from the naked eye, there's not many. In fact, the PS2 version looks better at times in both clarity and color.

However, it's pretty easy to see that the PS3 version is clearly better when it comes to polygon count and less jaggies on the character models. The redesigned face models also fill out the characters, making them look infinitely better on an HD picture.

What's really disappointing is seeing how washed out the Vita edition is. Perhaps it looks better on the handheld's gorgeous screen, but sometimes that version looks the worst out of all three editions when comparing overall color contrast.

For those that want an HD upgrade, it looks like the PS3 is the best way to go. Which is unfortunate because role-playing games scream for handheld devices, and a game like FFX deserved a little more attention on the Vita.

Strategy RPG 'Natural Doctrine' coming to PlayStation platforms this fall

Natural Doctrine, a strategy RPG developed by Kadokawa Games, is coming to North America on all the active PlayStation platforms later this year.

The announcement by IGN comes on the heels of the game coming out in Japan this week. NIS America will be publishing the title stateside, and it will be coming out this fall on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita.
Today, IGN can reveal that Natural Doctrine -- the slick-looking strategy-RPG -- will be released in western markets. The game was developed by Kadokawa Games and launches in Japan on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita on April 3rd. Kadokawa is publishing the game itself in Japan; in the west, NIS will publish it.
This is the first game from new developer Kadokawa Games. The game looks to have multiplayer, but it's unknown if that's through online play or Cross-Play. ND will also allow players to pick up and play on any device with additional Cross-Save functionality.

What exactly is ND? IGN details that its a fantasy title, featuring "adventurers" that gather "a substance known as Pluton" and save "the city of Feste from destruction." The site also compares it to the likes of Final Fantasy Tactics and Advance Wars.

Here's an eight-minute gameplay video from the developer themselves. It's all in Japanese, so good luck figuring out what the hell is going on.

Nearly all the Major League Baseball teams opened up regular season play on Monday, letting us know that spring is finally here and the newest edition of MLB The Show is finally out. Well, for anyone that doesn't have the latest PlayStation console.

Let's dive into everything new this week on PlayStation. NOTE: All prices reflected with PlayStation Plus subscription.

The highlight this week will be a toss-up, whether you're into sports games or not. If so, Sony exclusive MLB 14 The Show makes its debut on PS3 and Vita. May 6th is the current release date for the latest baseball entry to ship out to the PS4.

For those that are waiting for the game to come out next month, or can't stand baseball, the arcade platformer, Mercenary Kings, is free with a PS+ subscription to tie people over.

PSN Discounts

This week's newest discounts are mostly focused on The Amazing Spiderman, in preparation of the next installment, The Amazing Spiderman II, that's coming out later this month.

  • The Amazing Spiderman (PS3) - $17.99
  • The Amazing Spiderman (Vita) - $19.99
  • ASM DLC Bundle - $4.49
All of the following ASM DLC is available for $1.79 each.
  • Lizard Ramapage Pack
  • Oscorp Search and Destroy
  • Rhino Challenge
  • Stan Lee Adventure Pack

Finally, a game that's not apart of ASM, Obscure: The Aftermath, is available for 50 percent off at $5.

Instant Game Collection

There are two new games added into the IGC for PS+ subscribers. First, those that either have a PS4 or don't must claim their title of Mercenary Kings. The arcade shooter that resembles a throwback to the Metal Slug series is an absolute must-own for fans of the genre or those that are looking to kill some quick time without getting deep into a AAA title.

Not tired of super heroes yet? Batman: Arkham City is free on PS3. The classic by Rocksteady that's received rave reviews is now available. An interesting time unlocking this game considering a deluxe edition of the newer Arkham Origins was dropped today. Anybody that has a PS+ subscription and needs to get their Batman fix should just skip right past Origins and pick up the much better City for free.

PlayStation Update for March 25th: FEZ finally comes to PlayStation, BioShock sale, and free Monster Hunter

Lots of role-playing and strategy games are on the list in this week's humongous PlayStation update. Let's get right into it.

New Releases
(PlayStation Plus prices listed)

PS4

  • Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends (Complete Edition) - $59.99 (Digital/Retail)
  • FEZ - $9.74 (Digital, Cross Buy)
PS3
  • BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma - $40.49 (Digital price, $49.99 Retail)
  • Cabela's Big Game Hunter: Pro Hunts - $29.99 (Digital/Retail)
  • Deception IV: Blood Ties - $59.99 (Digital/Retail)
  • Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends - $39.99 (Digital/Retail)
  • FEZ - $9.74 (Digital, Cross Buy)
  • The Witch and the Hundred Knight - $49.99 (Digital/Retail)
Vita
  • Deception IV: Blood Ties - $39.99 (Digital/Retail)
  • Destiny of Spirits - Free-to-play (Digital)
  • Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends (Complete Edition) - $39.99 (Digital/Retail)
  • FEZ - $9.74 (Digital, Cross Buy)

Classics (Digital only)

  • TNN Motorsports Hardcore TR - $5.99 (PSone)
Demos
  • Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars - Vita
FEZ will be the biggest highlight of the week. Created by the disgruntled Phil Fish, who tried leaving the gaming industry behind by leaving Twitter, then coming back like they all do, FEZ is a puzzle platformer that is solved using both 2D and 3D worlds.

Yes, looking at a game that was released almost two years ago as a new release highlight should be frowned upon, but it's a critically-acclaimed game that's received visual upgrades and should be played by those that haven't touched it yet.

Other highlights include the latest installment of BlazBlue and the expansion to Dynasty Warriors 8. Chrono Phantasma is now available on PS3, and at the PS Store it's about $10 less than at retail. Xtreme Legends is an expansion that's also released as a full retail game (including DW8) for PS4 and Vita.

PS Store Discounts

FEZ is on sale for $9.74, over $3 less than the retail price. For those that don't own Xbox or haven't picked up the game on Steam (or the Humble Bundle), then you must live under a rock. Or, if you must reel in more trophies or just like games on your PlayStation devices, it would be wise to pick this game up now. This sale only lasts until next week.

Sony's Spring Fever sale also includes BioShock. Both of the original games are just $5.00 for PS+ members. Here's the prices for the DLC of BioShock Infinite:

  • Burial At Sea: Episode 1 - $7.34
  • Columbia's Finest Pack - $2.44
  • Clash in the Clouds - $3.49

Instant Game Collection

This week's free game for PS+ members is Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for Vita. There's been plenty of Monster Hunter clones that have been apart of the IGC, such as Gods Eater Burst and Soul Sacrifice, but finally, those that aren't into the Monster Hunter clones are finally getting the real thing.

MHFU is originally a PSP game that retails at $13.99 on Amazon. As far as value goes and how much time you can spend with a game, there is over 500 hours of gameplay on this thing.

Have a great week, everybody!

PlayStation Update for February 25th: Thief, Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, and the largest amount of discounts ever

There is a large amount of new releases and special deals for PlayStation owners this week, so let's get right into it.

New Releases

PS4
  • Thief - $59.99 (Digital/Retail)
  • Basement Crawl - $9.99* (Digital)
PS3
  • Thief - $59.99 (Digital/Retail)
  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 - $59.99 (Digital/Retail)
  • Magus - $29.99 (Digital/Retail)
  • Pac-Man Museum - $9.99* (Digital)
  • Port Royal 3 Gold Edition - $29.99 (Retail)
  • Tales of Symphonia Chronicles - $39.99 (Digital/Retail)
Vita
  • Mahjong World Contest - $3.99* (Digital)
PS2/PSone Classics
  • Herc's Adventures (PSone) - $5.99* (Digital)
*Projected price, not official.

Finally, a new triple-A title is being released this week, and arguably the biggest title of the year so far. Thief is getting mediocre reviews out of the gate, currently holding a 70 out of 100 at Metacritic at the time of this post.

Stealth games are generally not my cup of tea, so my pick of the week would be Tales of Symphonia Chronicles. It includes both games that were exclusive to the Nintendo GameCube and Wii (respectively). The first game is one of the better "Tales of" stories, and even spawned an anime series. The second one can get a little long and pales in comparison, but it's still features a good conclusion to the entire saga.

Vita features its worst week, and for those interested in Mahjong, it was already released in Europe with a detailed review from Vita Player here. However, the week may be slow for new releases on the handheld, but there's plenty of options in a massive sale this week.

Sony has two different sales going on at the same time. First, they feature some games that we've all missed in the past year. These deals aren't exactly doorbusters like their first sale earlier this year, but there's plenty of deals that are worth it.

NOTE: All the following prices are available to those that have a PlayStation Plus subscription.

Back to 2013 Sale
  • Diablo III - $35.99
  • Dragon's Crown (PS3/Vita) - $17.49
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2 classic?) - $4.89
  • Guacamelee! (Cross-buy) - $7.34
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us (Ultimate Edition, Vita) - $14.69
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us (Ultimate Edition, PS3/PS4) - $24.49
  • Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - $6.99
  • Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (PS2 classic?) - $3.49
  • Persona 4 Arena - $7.50
  • Rayman Legends - $29.39
  • Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (Vita) - $17.49
  • Spelunky (Cross-buy) - $7.34
  • Super Motherload (Cross-buy) - $3.75
  • Tales of Xillia - $14.99
  • Terraria (PS3) - $5.99
  • The Walking Dead: Season 2, Episode 1 - $2.79
  • The Walking Dead: Season 2 Pass - $10.49
  • Wolf Among Us: Episode 1 - $2.39
  • Wolf Among Us: Season Pass - $8.99
  • WWE 2K14 - $29.99
I'm not into either The Walking Dead or Wolf Among Us games, but those season passes sparked a lot of fans to snag those up. Other highlights include Ni No Kuni at seven bucks, Guacamelee for under eight bucks, Injustice on the PS4 for $25, Dragon's Crown at $17.49 (either PS3 or Vita, it's not cross-buy), or Terraria on the PS3 for those that don't have it on the Vita or other handheld device.

The next sale celebrates the birthday of the Vita.

PlayStation Vita 2-Year Anniversary Sale
  • Castlestorm - $4.89
  • Castlestorm (Collector's Edition) - $6.99
  • Castlestorm: From Outcast to Savior - $1.39
  • Castlestorm: The Warrior Queen - $1.39
  • Hotline Miami - $2.50
  • Velocity Ultra - $2.09
  • Sumioni: Demon Arts - $4.89
  • Orgarhythm - $4.59
  • Ragnarok Odyssey- $14.69
  • Valhalla Knights 3 - $14.69
  • Stick it to the Man - $6.29
  • Machinarium - $1.75
  • Proteus - $4.19
  • Killzone Mercenary - $17.49
  • Escape Plan - $7.34
  • Open Me! - $4.89
  • Malicious Rebirth - $7.34
  • flOw - $2.79
  • Flower - $3.49
Again, some games like Killzone were available for less in Sony's bigger sale earlier this year, but that's still not a bad price for one of the most full-fledged games on the handheld. Other recommendations are the Castlestorm collector's edition, Hotline Miami, Machinarium, and both flOw and Flower if those haven't been purchased yet. Remember, those games are now cross-buy for PS4 and Vita for those that purchased them on PS3 in the past.

Another discount this week that's not involved in this sale is Starhawk, now available for $10.49. I purchased this game over a year ago and it still sits firmly on my shelf all wrapped up. One day, I'll get to this game.

Instant Game Collection

Finally, this week's addition in the IGC for PS+ subscribers is Modnation Racers: Road Trip.

Have a great week everybody!

New Spelunky world record score exceeds $3 million

Somebody played seven hours of one run in Spelunky and set a new world record score.

From Destructoid:

It's a run that will, at least for the foreseeable future, remain at the top of the leaderboards.Bananasaurus Rex, known as being the first person to complete a solo eggplant run, has set the new world record score: $3,105,850.

That's absolutely insane, but kudos to Bananasaurus Rex, both to the ability to play the game for that long and that nickname. Here's the video of the entire 7+ hour run:

Watch live video from Bananasaurus_Rex on TwitchTV

I recently purchased Spelunky in Sony's blowout sale to open up the new year. It's an absolute blast to pick-up and play, especially on the Vita, but I'm still barely able to get a run to last over 15 minutes. Just getting $1 million as a high score would be a huge triumph.
