PlayStation 4 won't recognize current bluetooth headsets, USB headset support after system update

Similar to the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4 won't support any current headsets at launch.

Game Informer received exclusive answers from Sony themselves on the headset situation after one headset manufacturer, Astro Gaming, said their headsets would work on the PS4 but not right away.

Basically, this is how the whole situation is going down:

  • All Sony-branded and PULSE headsets will be compatible after a system update.
  • Any headset that uses a USB dongle for voice chat will be compatible in the future after an update.
  • Any headset that uses bluetooth for voice chat will not be compatible.
  • All headsets that receive game audio via digital optical can receive that audio at launch, but the voice chat portion will not be compatible until the update is released.
It's a real bummer for those that spend hundreds of dollars on a quality headset that they'll have to wait to see support for their investment. Instead, they'll have to deal with the headset included in the box, just like Xbox One early adopters.

Honestly, those that have expensive headsets may just want to hold off on a next-generation purchase. I think it's a shame that both Microsoft and Sony don't implement these expensive headsets immediately when they know plenty of serious online players have no problem dropping $300 on a quality headset.
