BioShock developer Irrational Games closing down

The good news about the video game industry is the number of stories involving developers closing up shop has dwindled. Unfortunately, Irrational Games, the developers of BioShock, will no longer be what we've known it to be.

Polygon reports that co-founder Ken Levine posted an open letter on the developer's website. It contained how Levine would be laying off everyone with the exception of 15 people, and will be creating "a smaller, more entreprenurial endeavor at Take-Two."

Levine said that he's "deeply proud" of what Irrational Games has accomplished, but that his passion "has turned to making a different kind of game than we've done before."

"I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers," he wrote in his open letter. "In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience."

Well over 100 people will lose their job, but Levine expressed in his open that they will do everything possible to give those that were laid off interviews with other companies and possible alternative opportunities with Take-Two studios.
