The PlayStation Blog featured Matt Thorson of Matt Makes Games, the developer of the former OUYA-exclusive TowerFall. He announced that the update, TowerFall Ascension, will be released on March 11th in the United States. He also goes into detail about what's new in this release:
In Ascension there are 50 new Versus arenas to fight on, for a total of 120 unique levels, and a bunch of new variants to customize your matches with. There are a few new powerups too, which change the game up considerably. My favorite: drill arrows that burrow through walls.
Ascension also introduces the new 1 or 2-player co-op Quest mode. It’s an arena mode where monsters spawn from portals as you defend yourself using the same skills you’ve honed in Versus mode.
For those that haven't played the original TowerFall, the game features 4-player combat in a single arena. Players shoot at each other with arrows. Powerups are scattered throughout the level to gain an advantage, and the last person standing wins.
Chris Person of Kotaku compared the original TowerFall to a mixture of Super Smash Bros. and Spelunky.
The addition of a story mode adds another layer to Ascension. The original TowerFall had a single-player mode where players shot targets, but this gives the mode a little more depth and replay value. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the game will feature online multiplayer.
It's an interesting move to bring this exclusively to PlayStation 4. The original TowerFall was rated highly by many reviewers, and was considered one of the best indie games and a reason why players should drop $100 on the OUYA.
