Ben Gilbert of Engadget gives us a look at the explanation at Develop yesterday by Sony R&D leader Neil Brown. With the gamer's PSN ID in hand, that person can access all of their games on any console.
Paired with the console's "Play As You Download" functionality, Brown promised that users will be able to instantly jump into their full library of digital games from any PS4 after signing in with their PSN ID. "This makes a digital library a practical option in the real world," he added.
To provide further detail, this isn't just accessing your account from the cloud. PSN IDs will sync game information, but the game will have to be downloaded to that console's hard drive.
While that sounds like a pain in the ass for PlayStation 3, the game just needs a limited amount downloaded before the user can jump right into the game.
Any physical copies will have to be installed from the disc, then need to be played with the disc in. None of that has changed from the current situation we have with physical copies.
Something like this may give users a little more incentive to buy games digitally. It is nice to be able to browse through a list of games right from the couch and not have to keep popping in discs in and out. Considering the installation involved in nearly all the games along with Sony's deals, it may overshadow the fact that gamers can't return or sell a digital version of the game.
