Sony acting quickly to replace PlayStation 4 units with 'blue light of death'

RAAAR

PlayStation 4 early adopters are experiencing issues that instantly turn the console into a $400 paperweight.

Labeled the "Blue Light of Death," some PS4 customers have received a console that won't output anything to their televisions and a blue, pulsating light is on the power display. Unlike Microsoft Xbox 360's "Red Ring of Death," the faulty systems seem to be immediate.

Sony indicates that their could be issues with the internal power supply or compatibility issues with certain televisions. They have since released a statement (per ABC News):

"The number of affected PS4 systems is less than 1 percent, which represents a very small percentage of total units shipped to date and is within the expected range for a new product introduction," said Sony in a statement. However, they are helping those who have been affected by the Blue Light of Death. "We understand the frustration of consumers that have had a problem and are working with them and our retail partners to help troubleshoot issues and ensure affected units are exchanged."

In general, systems are replaced with 7-9 business days after a "coffin" is given to the customer.

The impact of these broken systems is pretty significant. Considering over one million units were sold in the first 24 hours, that one percent is about 10,000 units. That's still a lot, but at least Sony is doing everything they can to help the early adopters.
