Sony Shutting Down MAG, SOCOM 4 Servers Next January

MAG

Two multiplayer-focused shooters that were Sony's attempt to lure in the Call of Duty crowd will shut down next January.

Sony will close the MAG, SOCOM 4, and SOCOM Confrontation servers on January 28th, 2014 according to a tweet from the official PlayStation account.

Yes, neither of these games cut into the COD market and may be considered failures. SOCOM hasn't held up through the years as the COD franchise continued to grow, and MAG's intentions of building a huge universe with 256 players in the same maps just never came to fruition.

I've never played SOCOM, but I purchased MAG for $.99 used at GameStop earlier this year. I've played around three or four nights of it since and there is still a community there and it's not hard to get into a game.

The game is actually fun to play, but there's nothing here that COD games haven't capitalized on. Zipper Interactive, the developers of MAG, closed their doors back on March 30th, 2012, meaning that there's been nothing worked on in the game since and the servers are full of hackers.

For less than a dollar, I've definitely played worse. Like almost everything on Google Play for 99 cents.
